Flu Shot Drill Successfully Tests Health District Mass
Vaccination Plans
Over 1,100 people receive seasonal flu vaccinations at special weekend clinics
LAS VEGAS – Nov. 19, 2005 – The Southern Nevada Health District provided seasonal flu vaccinations to 1,143 people today as part of a drill designed to test its emergency mass-vaccination plans. The drill was the first to test the district’s ability to simultaneously staff and operate multiple mass-vaccination clinics throughout the county.
While two locations – one at the Ravenholt Public Health Center and one at Silverado High School – were fully staffed and operated, the district notionally operated a total of 15 clinics in today’s drill. Health district emergency planners studied details such as transportation, equipment, supply and staffing requirements for each of the clinics. At peak capacity, each clinic can serve up to 500 people per hour. In an emergency situation with the potential for a large-scale outbreak of disease, the district may operate as many as 50 similar clinics to distribute preventive medications to the general population.
The health district continues to have ample supplies of flu vaccine. Adults and children that have not yet received a flu shot may visit any of the following district public health centers between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. weekdays:
- Ravenholt Public Health Center, 625 Shadow Lane
- East Las Vegas Public Health Center, 560 N. Nellis Blvd., Suite E12
- Henderson Public Health Center, 129 W. Lake Mead Blvd., Suite 10
- North Las Vegas Public Health Center, 1820 E. Lake Mead Blvd., Suite F
For more information on health district flu clinics and vaccine availability, the general public may call the district’s flu information line at (702) 385-INFO (4636).
